Effects of plant density and cutting-type on rooting and growth of an extensive green roof of Sedum sediforme (Jacq.) Pau in a Mediterranean environm…

2020

Abstract Species of the Sedum genus are a popular choice for green roofs as they thrive in shallow growth layers and are resilient to extreme environmental conditions; they are also easy to propagate from seed, plantlings or plant parts. The use of rooted cuttings is most widespread due to good rates of establishment. In the interest of cost reduction, the direct spreading of Sedum cuttings over the roof area, especially over large areas, has attracted attention in recent years. Considering the interest on the above method and the seeming lack of experimental data available, this study aims to further knowledge in this area. Experimental tests on direct spreading of unrooted cuttings of Sed…

Cranial suture biomechanics inMetoposaurus krasiejowensis(Temnospondyli, Stereospondyli) from the upper Triassic of Poland

2019

Cranial sutures connect adjacent bones of the skull and play an important role in the absorption of stresses that may occur during different activities. The Late Triassic temnospondyl amphibian Metoposaurus krasiejowensis has been extensively studied over the years in terms of skull biomechanics, but without a detailed description of the function of cranial sutures. In the present study, 34 thin sections of cranial sutures were examined in order to determine their histovariability and interpret their biomechanical role in the skull. The histological model was compared with three-dimensional-finite element analysis (FEA) simulations of the skull under bilateral and lateral biting as well as …

Thirty years unmanaged green roofs: Ecological research and design implications

2016

Abstract The variations in species composition and assemblage of unmanaged simple-intensive green roofs in Hannover, Germany, were investigated over a thirty year period, in order to assess the persistence of the initial seed mixture and to evaluate floristic changes. The roofs were greened in 1985 with soil-based turf rolls sown with a mixture of five grasses (Festuca rubra, Festuca ovina, Agrostis capillaris, Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis). Three sets of 120 phytosociological releves, sampled in 1987, 1999 and 2014, have been compared to assess: (1) nestedness vs spatial turnover, (2) functional diversity and (3) the importance of vegetation dynamics on green roof performance and desig…

A plant sociological approach for extensive green roofs in Mediterranean areas

2013

Extensive Green roofs can be an important mean for environmental mitigation if designed according to the principles of restoration ecology. Moreover, if optimally executed, properly managed and of sufficient extension, they could be assimilated to meta-populations of natural habitats, worth to be included in the biodiversity monitoring networks. The best example supporting this hypothesis is the Lake water plant Moos in Wollishofen (Zurich, Switzerland) where, on three 100 years old units of extensive green roofs, occur most of the typical flora of Mesobromion, including high density of some endangered orchid species. With this work, we propose a methodology approach for green roofs in Medi…

Experimental characterization of variable-speed packaged rooftop units in presence of evaporator fouling

2022

Variable-speed packaged rooftop units have been increasingly adopted in the commercial sector. If not properly maintained, the fouling of heat exchangers and the improper refrigerant charge could increase energy consumption. In this work, the response of variable-speed rooftop units to evaporator fouling is investigated based on experiments on a variable-speed 17.5 kW rooftop unit. A novel testing procedure is proposed, aimed at covering a broad range of operating conditions by a reduced number of tests. Two opposite cases were investigated: (i) even in presence of fouling, the controller can restore the required cooling capacity, and (ii) the intensity of the fouling does not allow the con…

The temnospondyl amphibian Cyclotosaurus from the Upper Triassic of Poland

2005

A gap in the Late Triassic fossil record of the capitosaur amphibian Cyclotosaurus is filled by new material from lacustrine deposits at Krasiejow, Poland, corresponding in age to the Lehrberg Beds (late Carnian) of Germany. The skull of the Polish cyclotosaur is intermediate in several respects between that of Cyclotosaurus robustus from the middle Carnian Schilfsandstein of Germany and the younger C. mordax from the early Norian Stubensandstein. It shows a decrease in the width of the skull and in the degree of con- cavity of the posterior margin of the skull roof. The differ- ences are significant enough to warrant erection of a novel species, the name Cyclotosaurus intermedius sp. nov. …

The Waterfront Theorem: an integrated and creative planning approach

2016

Waterfronts are sensitive interfaces between land and sea, creative interfaces between urban and environmental components, social interfaces between nodes and networks. They not only coincide with the areas of infrastructure that are gathering on the coast, not only with the shoreline or the environmental components of the coastal territories. They are hired by the project as complex interaction of crossing flows, stratified identity of urban communities: fundamental element of the environmental system, synthesis of landscape, space and community, a place of solidification of the identity of the social, cultural and economic community (Carta, 2009). The management of urban interface of wate…

Computing methods for resilience: evaluating new building components in the frame of SECAPs

2019

Resilience represents a new important feature that the anthropic systems, and cities among them, are called to cope with. In fact, the increasing negative stresses to which urban contexts are exposed, and mainly the climatic pressures, call for the capability of adapting to these modifications and, possibly, to restore the ex-ante situations. The role of the buildings and their envelope components is of crucial importance to this aim. This paper analyses the features of resilience of the roofs of buildings by means of proper quantitative indexes. On purpose, the performances of green and cool roofs are compared. The possibility of adopting nonstructural solutions, like the windows shading d…

A Survey on Daylighting Education in Italian Universities : Knowledge of Standards, Metrics and Simulation Tools

2021

Daylighting is a strategic topic to achieve sustainable buildings, so it is more and more imperative that it is implemented in architecture curricula to prepare a new generation of daylighting-oriented practitioners. In this frame, the DAYKE project (Daylight Knowledge in Europe) was set up to explore the level of knowledge about daylighting among European professionals and students. DAYKE-Europe was replicated as DAYKE-Italy to study the knowledge of daylight standards, metrics and software among Italian architecture students, and to compare it to that observed within DAYKE-Europe. A sample of 542 questionnaires were collected in five universities. Primary outcomes were: (i) a general low …

Vegetation growth parameters and leaf temperature: Experimental results from a six plots green roofs' system

2016

Abstract The paper provides a contribution for populating database of three physical parameters needed to model energy performance of buildings with green roofs: “coverage ratio” ( σ f ), leaf area index (LAI) and leaf temperature ( T f ). On purpose, six plant species were investigated experimentally: Phyla nordiflora, Aptenia lancifolia , Mesembryanthenum barbatus , Gazania nivea, Gazania uniflora , and Sedum . Proper ranges of the cited parameters have been found for each species. The here indicated ranges of σ f values refer to different growth levels of the species in the same lapse of time, that is four months. Single measured LAI values are also reported for the same plants. As for t…
